Coil Information

We recommend that all patients having a coil fitted should complete a self swab for any sexually transmitted infections that are non-symptomatic.

If you have not already received a swab kit, please ask at reception. Once you have completed the swab, place the swab and completed form back into the bag, ensuring the swab is labelled correctly, and return it to the collection box.

Please see the information below for guidance on how to complete the swab.

Cross Deep Surgery Coil Information
Why Should I have a swab prior to having a coil fitted?

A pre-coil (IUD/IUS) swab test is recommended to ensure safety and prevent complications during and after the fitting procedure. The primary reason is to check for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)—specifically chlamydia and gonorrhoea—that may not have symptoms.
Here is why this test is necessary:
  • Preventing Pelvic Infection: If an IUD is inserted while an untreated STI is present in the lower vagina, the procedure can introduce the infection into the uterus and fallopian tubes, causing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).
  • Safety Precaution: It ensures that you are not, or are not likely to be, at risk of infection before the device is inserted, which is particularly important if you have had a new sexual partner in the past 12 months.
  • Preventing Unintended Pregnancy: The appointment process often includes a pregnancy test to ensure you are not already pregnant, as a coil cannot be fitted if there is a risk of pregnancy.
    • If you are under 26 years old.
    • If you have had a new sexual partner in the last year.
    • If you have any symptoms like unusual discharge or pain.

What happens if I don’t have a swab?

While you can sometimes have swabs taken at the time of the coil fit, it is safer to have them done at least a week before to ensure the results are back, preventing risks of infection.
What should I do to prepare for the test?
    • Abstain from sexual intercourse (including with a condom) for at least 7 days before the swab test, or at least from the first day of your period before your appointment.
    • If you are switching from another method of contraception (like the pill), continue that method until the coil is fitted.

Is there anything else I need to know?
  • The test is usually a simple, self-taken cotton bud swab from the lower vagina.
  • If you have had a negative test within the last 6 months and no new partners, you may not need another one.
  • It is advised that you do not have sex 7 days before your appointment, to ensure that there is no sperm in your body that could result in a pregnancy if it is not possible to fit a new coil after the original one is removed
